IMPORTANT EVENTS TO NOTE

We also went to Pukerangiora. We sat in the SAPS that had been dug by the British soldiers. They dug about 3.5 kms of saps so that they could capture the Pa at Pukerangiora. Just before they got there a truce was declared.
The museum staff brought along a replica musket of the type that would have been used at this time by the soldiers. Brittany and Tate were keen to show how to fire it.

We visited Puketakauere Pa which overlooks the township of Waitara. The Maori chose this site to defend because it had a lot of swampy ground around it. From here they could see where the British forces were camped in Waitara. We played an interesting game that showed us how much easier it was to defend than it was to attack. Some of the attackers ammunition (tennis balls) were thrown back to give them another chance.

OUR VISIT BEGAN AT BRIXTON Last Wednesday we went on a bus trip to visit some important sites where the Taranaki Land Wars began in 1860.
The staff from Puke Ariki told us about the Treaty of Waitangi and the THREE ARTICLES that were agreed to.
Sarah and Drew signed a mock Treaty. Can you guess who Sarah and Drew were representing? Sarah represented the Governor and Drew a Maori chief.
The photographs being held are photos from the museum of some of the key people in the Land Wars of 1860.
This year is the 150th anniversary of the start of Taranaki Land Wars and there will be an exhibition at Puke Ariki (The Taranaki Museum).

COMING EVENTS - PLEASE MAKE A NOTE
1. LIFE EDUCATION - we will be having three sessions when the Life Education trailer arrives. We will be looking at keeping our bodies clean of undesirable substances. It is important that everyone in the class attends. There is a cost of $3.00 per child to cover costs. Please send it to school as soon as you can.
2. WALKING IN THE STEPS - The class will be visiting the sites where the conflicts were during the Land Wars of 1860. This year it is 150 since this event occurred. The events are a major focus of our first inquiry and it is important that all class members go on the trip. We need cars to transport us (9:00 am - 2:30 pm) so if you are able to help please let us know. If we can't get enough cars we will look at hiring a bus. Put the day aside - you will find it very interesting.
